The Boardman High School Boys' Swim Team are 2006 Co-Champions of the Northeast Aquatic Conference by defeating Massillon to finish the season with six conference wins and one loss. Wooster High School finished with an identical record and will share the title with Boardman. 

Congratulations to the Spartans Boys Swim Team - 2006 Federal League Co-Champions! They beat undefeated GlenOak to tie them and North Canton Hoover for 1st. All three teams will share the title with 4-1 Federal League dual meet records...

February 18, 2006 - District Tournament
The Spartan boy's swim team qualified all three relays and the 50 freestyle for the State Swimming Championships in Canton. Sophomore Conner O'Halloran, Senior Chad DeAngelo, Junior Brian Worhatch, Sophomore Mike Barringer, Junior Kenny Drombosky and Senior David Shilling will be competing this Friday and Saturday. The 200-freestyle relay of Barringer, DeAngelo, Worhatch, and O'Halloran finished second at the district meet in an All-American consideration time of 1:28.76. Mike Barringer, David Shilling, Brian Worhatch, and Conner O'Halloran broke the school record in the 400-freestyle relay. Boardman tied with
Cleveland St. Edward's for 7th place and had to swim the relay again in 15 minutes later to break the tie. The Spartan relay reset the school record with Kenny Drombosky subbing for David Shilling. The new record time of 3:17.31 breaks the old school record of 3:18.00 set by Grant Brown, Brian Katz, Lee Knight and Tyler O'Halloran at the State Swimming Championships three years ago. Sophomore Conner O'Halloran will return to the State meet in the 50-yard freestyle by placing 5th with a 22.00 in the district meet. He finished in 16th place at last years state meet as a freshman. O'Halloran teamed with Chad DeAngelo, Brian Worhatch, and Mike Barringer to place 6th in the 200 medley relay in a season best state qualifying time of 1:40.58. The boy's team placed 6th in the Northeast Ohio District out of 104 teams participating. University School took first in the district meet.

February 11, 2006 - Sectional Tournament
The Spartan Swimmers advanced twelve to the Northeast District Swim Championships at Cleveland State University on February 17-18. Boardman took a first place in the boy's 200 medley relay. Conner O'Halloran, Chad DeAngelo, Brian Worhatch and Mike Barringer posted a 1:42.61 to win the event and automatically advance to the District Championships. The same four swimmers also placed second to qualify automatically in the 200 freestyle relay. Worhatch advanced by placing second in the 100 butterfly. O'Halloran took a second place in the 50 freestyle while DeAngelo placed second in the 100 breaststroke. Barringer qualified by placing third place in the 200 individual medley. Barringer qualified by placing third in the 200 individual medley. Barringer, David Shilling, Worhatch, and O'Halloran qualified with an at-large selection in the 400 freestyle relay. Other Spartan at-large qualifiers were as follows: Erik Kuffel 200 individual medley, Mark Kuntzman 20 and 500 freestyle, David Shilling 100 and 200 freestyle, Kenny Drombosky 50 and 100 freestyle. Terry O'Halloran "We had an excellent meet at the Sectional Championships. Almost all of our swimmers swam their best times of the season. We are looking forward to the District Championships in Cleveland this weekend. All three of our boy's relays are seeded in the top six and have an excellent chance of moving on to State Championships in Canton in two weeks. Sophomore Conner O'Halloran had a career best time of 21.88 in the 50 freestyle and has an excellent chance of qualifying for the state meet."

On the boys side, The Spartan boys dominated Howland by winning 10 out of the 11 events. Boardman showed its depth by having seven different swimmers win their individual events. Senior David Shilling won the 200 Freestyle. Juniors Erik Kuffel (200 IM) Brian Worhatch 100 (Butterfly), Mark Kuntzman (500 Freestyle), and Jamie Mastriana (100 Backstroke) won their events. Sophomores Conner O'Halloran won the 50 Freestyle, and Mike Barringer won the 100 Freestyle. Boardman also won the 200 Medley by 18 seconds. Barringer, Junior Kenny Drombrosky, Worhatch and O'Halloran took first in the 200 Free Relay by 16 seconds. Barringer Shilling, Worhatch, and O'Halloran finished 24 seconds ahead of Howland in the 400 Free Relay.

02.06.06 Note: The Spartan Boys and Girls Swim Teams concluded their dual meet season with victories over Howland. The senior swimmers and their parents were recognized before the meet at YSU. In the Saturday Meet at Massillon, the boys won all of the events to run their dual meet record to 12-2. The Spartan Swimmers showed their depth by winning the eight individual events with eight different swimmers. David Shilling won the 200 Free. Mike Barringer won the 200 Individual Medley. Conner O'Halloran won the 50 Freestyle. Brian Worhatch took first in the 100 Butterfly. Kenny Drombosky won the 100 Freestyle. Mark Kuntzman won the 500 Freestyle. Jamie Mastriana took first in the 100 Backstroke and Chad DeAngelo won the 100 Breaststroke. O'Halloran, DeAngelo, Worhatch and Barringer took first in the 200 Medley Relay. Drombosky, DeAngelo, Worhatch and Barringer won the 200 Free Relay. Barringer, Shilling, Drombosky and O'Halloran concluded the meet by winning the 400 Free Relay.

In local action the girls and boys team dominated the Poland Bulldogs by taking first places in 19 out of 24 events. Seniors Dave Shilling and Chad DeAngelo had victories in the 200 Freestyle and the 100 Breaststroke. Juniors Mark Kuntzman and Brian Worhatch won the 500 Freestyle and the 100 Butterfly. The Spartans made up a 13 point deficit, because Boardman does not field a diving team, and won the meet by 5 points. "Our boys really wanted to win this one after we lost to GlenOak in the NEAC Championships two weeks ago. We were very quick off the block and strong on the finishes which made the difference on the close races. GlenOak is coached by Jeff Burrows who has over 400 dual meet victories in Northeast Ohio. 01.0706 Notes: Sophomore Mike Barringer won two Individual Conference Titles. He took first in the 200 yard IM in a career best time of 2:05.87. Barringer also won the 100 yard FS in the time of 50.28. Sophomore Conner O'Halloran won a Conference Title in the 50 yard FS in a career best time of 21.91. Barringer and O'Halloran teamed up with senior David Shilling, and Junior Brian Worhatch to win the 400FS relay in a time of 3:19.18. Junior Ken Drombosky, Shilling, Junior Mark Kuntzman and DeAngelo won the 200FS relay in a time of 1:32.99. O'Halloran, DeAngelo, Worhatch, and Barringer took a second in the 200 MR in a season best time of 1:41.32. Worhatch had a second place finish in the 100BF. All three relays and O'Halloran's 50 freestyle time are now ranked in the top high school times posted in the state of Ohio this season. "Having state ranked times in the middle of the season means our Boy's Team is heading in the right direction. We still have a lot of hard work and competition in front of us. Our swimmers are motivated and really want to return to the Ohio State Swimming Championships."

01.05.06 Notes: The Spartan Girls and Boys Swim Teams took first place in all if the events against Lake.  "It was good to get back into competition again after the three weeks of hard practices.  Our Girls' Team has made a lot of progress since the beginning of the season.  Sophomore Kayla Aldan and Freshman Katie Henson are working very hard and swimming fast.  Assistant Coaches Carlo Cordon and Greg McAtee are a big part of why both Teams are posting winning records."

12.17.05 Notes: State ranked Teams from Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus and Northeast Ohio gathered in Canton for the 3rd Annual Christmas Swimming Invitational.  Boardman sophomore Conner O'Halloran led the Spartan Swimmers by taking a first place in the 50FS with a season best time of 22.29 and a fourth place in the 100FS with a time of 49.99.  Junior Brian Horhatch took a fifth place in the 100BF with a career best time of 54.00.  Worhatch and O'Halloran teamed with senior Chad DeAngelo and sophomore Mike Barringer to place second in the 200FSR with a season best time of 1:30.97.  Boardman was only three tenths of a second behind the winning team Akron Firestone.  The same four Swimmers placed fifth in the 200MR in a season best time of 1:43.96.

The Lady Spartans Swimmers finished the season in sixth place with a conference record of two wins, four losses and one tie.

February 18, 2006 - District Tournament
Katie Henson broke the freshman record in the 100 backstroke in the girl's competition. Her time of 1:06.35 broke the old mark of 1:06.86 set by Molly McAtee. Henson teamed with Melanie Sfara, Adrienne Porter, and Kamiren Veisz to finish in 19th place in the 200 medley relay. "Our swimmers had a terrific district competition! They set the goal of returning to the state meet at the beginning of the season and they worked hard to reach it. The district meet is a real pressure cooker where you see many of the state's fastest swimmers for the first time. They are looking forward to mixing it up with the best swimmers in the state this coming Friday and Saturday in Canton. Many of the Spartan swimmers had their best times and place finishes at the District Championships. The Girls 200 medley relay made up of Katie Henson, Melanie Sfara, Adrienne Porter and Kamiern Veisz qualified for an at-large in the 200 medley relay and the 100 backstroke. Terry O'Halloran "We had an excellent meet at the Sectional Championships. Almost all of our swimmers swam their best times of the season. We are looking forward to the District Championships in Cleveland this weekend."

The Spartan Ladies were behind in their meet until the last event, the 400 Freestyle relay. Boardman needed to take a first and third place in the relays to win the meet. Sophomore Kayla Aldan, Juniors Adrienne Porter and Courtney Tamulonis, and Freshman Katie Henson swam a season best dual meet time 4:08.70 to take the needed first place. Juniors Tara Mallis and Sara Henson, Sophomore Annie Smrek and Freshman Sara Cantanzriti nailed down the third place to win the meet by 5 points. "It was an exciting meet and our dual meet season for our girl's team. We kept the score close and finished with several strong swims to pull our the victory. Our girls have worked hard at practice all year and that made a difference in today's meet. We are already looking forward to next season when we combine a talented group of incoming freshman with our returning swimmers", said Coach O'Halloran. Katie Henson lead the girls with double victories in the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Backstroke. Henson's time in the backstroke were a career best at 1:08.64. Kayla Aldan took first in the 500-yard freestyle.

Sophomores Kamiren Veisz and Kayla Aldan joined Freshman Katie Henson in winning two individual events each. Veisz took firsts in the 50 and 100 Freestyle. Aldan won the 200 and 500 Freestyle. Henson had victories in the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Backstroke. Junior Adrienne Porter won the 100 Butterfly.

The Boardman High School Boys Varsity Soccer Program completed its 2005 season on Saturday, October 22nd, 2005. The Spartans played host to Canton's Glen Oak, in the second round of tournament play. Scoring for the Spartans was Senior Nick Antonucci at the 35:49 mark of the first half. The score at half time was tied 1 to 1. Sophomore Anthony Grenga was in goal for the Spartans and had 6 saves. The Boys Soccer Team finishes regular season play with a record of 8-6-2 with a loss to Canfield.  Boardmans goal came from a penalty kick from Sophomore Sam Ragan with 21:02 remaining in the second half bringing the score to: Boardman 1 Canfield 2.  Anthony Grenga was in goal for the Spartans with 7 saves for the match.  JV : Boardman 0 Canfield 1.

Boardman Improves Overall Record to 8-5-2 with a 3 to 2 win over Austintown Fitch. Boardman managed to score early and maintained the lead against a tough Falcon squad. Scoring for the Spartans at 39:17 in the first half was Michael Callahan with an assist by Barrett Singleton. Barrett Singleton then hit the back of the net at 33:28 with the assist going to Doug Melquist. The Score at half time was 2 to 1 Boardman. Singleton Scored his second goal for the evening in the second half at 35:43, with the assist by Michael Ryan. Goal Keeper for the Spartans was Anthony Grenga with 9 saves. Goalkeeper for Fitch was Brian Remias with 12 saves. JV: Boardman 2 Fitch 1. Brett Balog and Bob Gratz tallied the goals Derek Wilkes get the win as the Spartans goalkeeper.

Sophomore Sam Ragan scored the goal for the Spartans, with Nick Antonucci getting the assist.  Boardman Goalie Matt Moore had 5 saves.  Poland Goal Keeper Caleb Markusic had 9 saves.  The Spartans record now stands at 7-5-2 for the season.  JV: Boardman 0 Poland 0.

Nick Antonucci scored the loan goal for the Spartans with 13:37 remaining in the first half of play.  The Polar Bear defense was playing well as they kept the Spartans to just a couple of quality opportunities to score during the second half of play, all of which missed the mark.  Matt Moore was in the goal for The Spartans and collected 11 saves. John Brubach was in goal for Jackson and had 4 saves. Boardman Sophomore Vic Kudav saw his first Varsity action during tonights Varsity contest. Boardman's record is now 7-4-2 for the season and Jackson is 9-2-0 for the season.  JV: Boardman 0 Jackson 4.  Derek Wilkes was in goal for Boardman and collected 14 saves for the match. Boardman held the Polar Bears to a 1 to 0 lead during the first half of play.

Eric Bouslough lead the scoring for the Spartans with goals off of two free kicks. Vic Kudav also netted a goal bringing the score to 3 to 0 Boardman. Luke Joachim had the assist on the Kudav goal.  Matt Moore handled the goalkeeping duties for the Spartans and collected 6 saves.  Saturdays game saw solid defensive play from Steve Dolasinski, Vince Calautti and Rocco DeGennaro.  Offensively The Spartans had several scoring  opportunities from freshmen Alex Fornwalt and Matt Wallace late in the game.  Rounding out the Boardman squad on Saturday were Chris Marian, Derek Wilkes, Anthony Pasquale, John Cherol and Michael Manis.

Score was tied 0 to 0 at half time.  Goals for the Spartans were by Sophomore Sam Ragan with 38:30 remaining in the second half, and Senior Bob Davis with 34:43 remaining in the game.  Anthony Grenga and Nick Antonucci had assists.  Matt Moore was in the goal for Spartans with 11 saves and Matt Brenn was in goal for The RoughRiders collecting 7 saves.  Boardman's record is now 7-3-2 for the season and Kent is now 7-1-3.  JV: Boardman 1 Kent Roosevelt 1.  Boardman Goal by Vic Kudav.  John Cherol in goal for the Spartans.

Scoring for the Spartans were Senior Nick Antonucci off a pass from Senior Bob Davis, and Junior TJ Hosa with Sophomore Sam Ragan getting the assist. Sophomore Matt Moore was back in the goal for the Spartans after returning from a hand injury.  JV: Boardman 0 GlenOak 3.  John Cherol & Derek Wilkes split the Goalkeeping duties for the Spartans.

The Boardman Boys Varsity Soccer team played host to the Glen Oak Golden Eagles on Tuesday, as the Spartans celebrated Senior Night 2005. The match ended in a 2 to 2 tie; bringing the Spartans record to 7-3-1 for the season.  Before the Varsity kickoff the 2005 Seniors and parents were honored. The 2005 Senior Spartans are: Captain Bob Davis, Nick Antonucci, John Cherol, Bob Gratz, Luke Joachim , Michael Manis, Michael Ryan, Barrett Singleton, and Sam Stoll.  The Spartan Soccer Boosters hosted a spaghetti dinner for the team after the game in the school cafeteria in celebration of Senior Night. A special Thank You goes out to the Booster Board, and volunteers for hosting yet another wonderful event for the team.

TJ Hosa led all scoring with three goals as Boardman defeats Federal League opponent Canton McKinley 8-0.  Nick Antonucci (2), Bob Gratz (2) and Phil Curl (1) also scored.  Assists were by Sam Ragan (2), DJ Herman (1) and Antonucci (1). Canton Mckinley keeper, Josh Forsyth had 11 saves. Boardman keeper Anthony Grenga recorded the shut-out. Boardman JV team won 3-0.

September 15, 2005 - Boardman Soccer Complex
Boardman Beats Louisville with 4 seconds to go in the match! TJ Hosa pulled the Spartans into the lead with 4 seconds remaining on the clock... Boardman wins 3 to 2!  Nick Antonucci scored the Spartans first goal with 1:50 remaining in the fist half to tie the score 1 to 1 at halftime. Louisville answered in the second half with a goal at the 22:47 mark, putting them into the lead 2 to 1. Boardman's TJ Hosa scored a goal off a corner kick by Phil Curl with 16:08 to go , putting the score even at 2 all and then put the winning goal into the net with only 4 seconds remaining in the game. Barrett Singleton had the assist on the final Hosa goal. Boardmans Goal Keeper was Anthony Grenga with 7 saves and Louisville Keeper Zack Kwasnacka had 15 saves for the night. Boardman is now 5-3-0 for the season.  The Spartans are coached by Ahmet Olgun and Eric Simione.

Goalkeeper for the Spartans was Sophomore Anthony Grenga, replacing Matt Moore who suffered a hand injury last week.  Grenga had 10 saves for the Spartans.  The Spartans goal was scored by Sophomore Sam Ragan off a free kick with 18:49 remaining in the first half.  The Score at half time was tied at 1-1.  Uniontown Lake scored 3 unanswered goals in the second half, two being in quick succession, final 4 to 1 win for Uniontown Lake.  Uniontown Lake's goalkeeper was Freshman Will Shultz.  Shultz had 6 saves.  JV: Boardman 1 Uniontown Lake 2.  The Spartans goal was by Mike Mannis and John Cherol was in the goal for the Spartans.

Goalkeeper Matt Moore nets 4th shut out for the season, with the Spartans 2 to 0 win over the Perry Panthers in Massillon Tuesday night. Eric Bouslough and TJ Hosa notched the goals for Boardman, with Nick Antonucci having an assist. Moore had 5 saves while Perrys' Aaron Dillion had 8 saves.  The Panthers record now sits at 3-1 for the season.  JV: Boardman 0 Perry 1.  Derek Wilkes in Goal.
