Boardman Local Schools
Athletic Substance Abuse Guide

The Board of Education recognizes its share of responsibility for the health and welfare of the students who attend the Boardman schools.  As seen in the Student Code of Conduct, Board policy 506 and 507, the Board is concerned about the problems of substance abuse.  The Board recognizes that illegal or inappropriate uses of alcohol, narcotic drugs, anabolic steroids, or other controlled substances constitute potential hazards to the positive development of all students.  Therefore, the Board of Education wishes to make both parents and athletes aware of the following:

Recently professional and non-professional athletes have publicized a great deal of information regarding anabolic steroid and other substance abuse.  However, the largest groups of athletes, those involved in inter-scholastic sports, are also experiencing health problems due to substance abuse.

The abused substances may be legal, illegal, controlled and may include such items as anabolic steroids, growth hormones, amphetamines, “diet pills”, alcohol, marijuana, tobacco products, mega-dose vitamins, and protein supplements.  While some of these substances do not have and immediate or noticeable adverse health effects, repeated or prolonged use may have severe physical, mental, or even fatal consequences.

It should also be understood that disciplinary measures may result if such violations occur.  These measures may include denial of athletic participation, school suspension, and/ or school expulsion.  In addition, civil consequences may also result.

The Boardman Schools and their coaches recognize that proper physical preparation can be enhanced through a variety of positive, healthy measures.  Proper supervised training, adequate rest, and sound nutritional practices are essential.  Athletes should contact their coach, athletic trainer, or physician for the correct balance of nutrients to help them in their specific sport.

If the student athlete or parent/ guardian has any questions concerning the aforementioned information please contact the coach or Principal.

Please sign below to indicate that you are aware of the Student Code of Conduct, Policies 506 and 507 and the procedures followed regarding substance use, abuse and possession.
